Before the season began, Person head baseball coach Steve Evans talked about how Southern Durham could be the surprise team in the Piedmont Athletic Conference in 2010. After all, it took a three-run home run for the Rockets to escape with an 11-10 win in the first meeting against the Spartans last year. And with its athleticism and speed, Southern looked to be a potentially dangerous opponent.

Racing season kicks off Saturday night at Wheel 2 Wheel Raceway at the Fairgrounds. The event is the first of 11 scheduled at Wheel 2 Wheel Raceway this year. From 6 to 7 p.m. will be the qualifying heats for the sidecar events, and the Pro Speedway Bike Show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 14, and admission for anyone under 5 is free.

A BUSINESSMAN has spoken of his relief after fire threatened to completely destroy a large scale paper recycling plant. Flames rose 30 feet as the blaze ripped through 400 tonnes of paper bundles at the rear of the factory. Steve Evans, managing director of Parry and Evans Paper Recycling Factory on Deeside Industrial Park, was at home when a worker spotted the fire at 6.30pm on Tuesday night.

The first home game of the season for the Person Rockets came unexpectedly Tuesday evening, as they were originally scheduled to play their Piedmont Athletic Conference opener at Northern Durham. But because Northern's home field was not in playable condition, the contest got switched to Rocket Park and it proved to be a rewarding change of venue as Person showed resiliency and came away with a 6-4 victory over the Knights. It was the conference opener for both teams and the first entrance into the 20
